“The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows” by James Bryan Smith

Review by Keith Robinson, July 2020

There are books in life I think every Christian should read, preferably more than once. This book and its two companion volumes are such books. James Bryan Smith has found a way to explore from a contemporary evangelical perspective spiritual, which he calls “soul”, exercises. As he explores the very nature of who God is, each chapter ends in a “soul exercise.” I have led this study twice and participated a third time.  Each time there is something new. Each time it seems God gets hold of me and challenges me to live life differently.

In this first book, James looks at how God is good, trustworthy, generous, love, holy, self-sacrificing, transformational and how to make a pickle. You will have to read the book to understand that last one, but it was one of the most important to me!

The material is easily understood and the soul exercises are very relevant to today’s missions life.
